This review is from: Pure Krav Maga - Self Defense Mastery (DVD)
"The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires." ~ William Arthur Ward.  Grandmaster Boaz Aviram inspires.

I own several self defense dvds, including Krav Maga videos. This dvd series, Pure Krav Maga - Self Defense Mastery, by Grandmaster Boaz Aviram, is by far the best one. It presents a most excellent, comprehensive study of Israeli Defense Forces Krav Maga. It can be used as learning resource on its own, or better yet along with its companion book, Krav Maga - Use Your Body as a Weapon,  also by Boaz.

Why I chose real Krav Maga:  Years ago I trained in Judo and Karate, and thought I at least knew enough to be able to defend myself if I was ever physically attacked.

But I learned the hard way that the techniques I depended upon and practiced over and over were not going to help me in real-life situations. I found myself at the losing end of every physical assault against me.

I couldn't defend myself. I discovered that traditional martial arts and MMA weren't the answer. MMA is actually sport with rules for the safety of the participants.

The techniques are too numerous and many are too complicated to "instinctively" engage when you are at your highest stress level and completely filled with fear. Training in real Krav Maga has made the difference for me.

What is Krav Maga?
Simply put, Krav Maga is the original Israeli Defense Forces hand-to-hand combat fighting system. Unlike traditional martial arts and MMA for sport and entertainment, IDF Krav Maga was developed as a method to efficiently and effectively engage the human body's natural abilities and reactions to prevail against an enemy in the shortest time possible.. preferably within a few seconds.

That is the essence of Krav Maga. "If you finish your opponent, you finish the fight."

"Krav Maga is efficient and therefore simple. It is not efficient because it is simple." Authentic Krav Maga is not a martial art and was never meant to be taught dojo-style over a period of years. Soldiers don't have years to learn to defend themselves. On the contrary, the Krav Maga curriculum was designed to be taught in its entirety within approx 21 hours, even to students with no prior h2h experience. These students actually do quite well as they do not have any bad habits to unlearn. The IDF curriculum is taught as an intensive, with additional hours required only for IDF Krav Maga Instructor training.

What you will learn..
There are seven discs in the series. They present the entire IDF curriculum, compressed into approx 7.5 hours. You will start with information that will help you see the 'big picture.'

Before you delve into the actual physical techniques, you will learn the principles of Krav Maga. Among them are are danger analysis, reaction time, legal implications, the location of pressure points or the primary target areas of Krav Maga (many that are not allowed in MMA) and the physiology of their reactions to force and strikes to them, and the human body's natural survival reactions.

After introducing them, Grandmaster Boaz incorporates these principles as he progresses thru detailed descriptions, demonstrations, and the actual real-time training of a newbie student in all of the defenses, attacks and counters. While other videos might tell you what to do.. you will learn the whys and the why-nots for every situation you can think of as he guides her and you thru the complete IDF Krav Maga training curriculum.

You will study attacks, defenses, and counters.. strikes, kicks, close-range encounters, ground fighting, club, chain, knife, pistol, and a whole lot more. One of the very FIRST things you will learn is how to deliver an effective knock-out punch. This is the essence of real Krav Maga.. efficiency. Taking as little time as possible. Again, "If you finish your opponent, you finish the fight."

These dvds were exactly what I wanted. I needed to literally see the techniques broken down step-by-step, and shot from different angles so I could correctly process the motor movements. I wanted to know why one defense or counter was better than another. I wanted to know the reasoning behind everything. I was wanting the principles of Krav Maga. Boaz's videos delivered.

In a nutshell..
Former IDF Krav Maga Chief Instructor Boaz Aviram's Pure Krav Maga - Self Defense Mastery dvd series is a straight-forward presentation of the authentic entire IDF Krav Maga curriculum.

By taking time to study and practice the material carefully, you will be able to grasp the big picture, the principles, concepts and techniques of Pure Krav Maga.

The series is also perfect for instructors as a reference and resource for self training and teaching Krav Maga students in REAL Krav Maga.. Pure Krav Maga. Also highly recommended as a stand-alone teaching resource, or even better yet as a companion is Grandmaster Aviram's book, Krav Maga - Use Your Body as a Weapon,  which should be studied by every serious Krav Maga practitioner regardless of level of proficiency.

About Grandmaster Boaz Aviram..
Boaz Aviram is third in the lineage of the original Israeli Defense Forces Krav Maga Chief Instructors, following the first and KM founder Immi Sde-Or Lichtenfeld, and his successor Eli Avikzar.

These three men are responsible for the development of the Krav Maga curriculum as taught to the soldiers of the IDF. Boaz also holds an IDF firearms instructor certification.

In his book, Boaz tells how he got involved in Krav Maga. He relates some of his personal experiences in defensive situations, beginning as a youngster in Tel Aviv and progressing thru his service in the IDF and afterward.

He talks about being a student of martial arts, including completing the 100-men Kumite, earning his 2nd Dan Black Belt in Kyokushin, and how he became involved in learning military Krav Maga, advancing to the position of Israeli Defense Forces Fighting Fitness Academy Krav Maga Chief Instructor, and his training and certifying of other IDF Krav Maga instructors.

He tells why, after his first three hours learning IDF Krav Maga, he concluded that "seven years of training two hours daily in almost all other major martial arts were a waste of time."

The fact that he personally has prevailed using Krav Maga against real attackers gives him even more credibility in my mind. He knows what works and what doesn't.. the good vs. the "garbage." Unlike many of the founders and leaders of the "civilian" KM organizations, Boaz Aviram's credentials are indisputable. He is as real as real can get.

During the time I was reading, watching, and studying his book and dvds, I became acquainted with Boaz via email and messaging via internet.

That was almost two years ago. He basically took me on as a student. He graciously answered in detail all of my questions while he challenged me to think and analyze. He sent me articles to review and videos to dissect. He put me on the spot more than once by asking ME questions.. all to teach me.

If I said I was interested in something that he knew to be garbage.. he would tell me so with an explanation of why it was garbage. He showed himself to be genuinely interested in my learning and demonstrated his love for what continues to be his life's work.. teaching real Krav Maga.

I have since had the honor and privilege of meeting Grandmaster Aviram, training privately with him, and being certified by him as a Pure Krav Maga Instructor.

It was so very obvious that his main objective is to document, preserve, and maintain the authenticity, the purity, and the essence of Krav Maga, rather than join the mostly financially-driven so-called "evolution" of Krav Maga which is not an evolution, but rather the progressive dilution of the true Krav Maga by a mix of MMA and outside techniques, and marketed to the unsuspecting public as the real thing, often by MMA instructors who have never trained a day in real Krav Maga.

Boaz's passion for the real Pure Krav Maga is contagious. He passed it to me, and now I too have a major case of it.

As a certified firearms instructor and Pure Krav Maga Instructor, I am pleased to have added seminars and classes in IDF-PKM to my list of training options for my students.

Thank you for your well-written review of Grandmaster Aviram's book and DVD series. I purchased his book a couple of weeks ago and expect to receive the DVD series today. I am ranked in Sho Sho Ryu Aikibujutsu, and have trained in various other martial arts over the years. Still, I have always wanted to learn what works. So, for the past month I have been training in KM in California. And while I have enjoyed the camaraderie and learning a different approach to self-defense, it felt like another dojo approach to self-defense, as in piecemeal and costly.

I could go on, but I will say that your experience of Grandmaster Aviram's willingness to share what he knows and take a personal interest in your development mirrors my own -- even to the type of training shoe he recommends for Pure Krav Maga. Rather amazing when I consider his background, the level of success and respect he has earned internationally, and that we live on opposite sides of the United States. I feel very fortunate and look forward to training in Pure Krav Maga.
