Pure Krav Maga is not today's Known Krav Maga but the Original Krav Maga taught in the Israel Defense Force.
If you read this article in the enclosed link you could see Imrich's intention to preserve the original Krav Maga at the IDF and make a "lighter" fitness program" to the civilian Market. Its Called Kosher Kungfu
It is saying something like Currently Imrich is trying to develop a program suitable for youth. To my knowledge Immi did not want the real Krav Maga to get out of the IDF, and at the same time still wanted youth to learn self defense.
Since I went through both the IDF Krav Maga and the first civilian association I concluded that while civilian Krav Maga skills would give the average student very simple self defense skills the IDF Krav Maga prepared them to win a fight with any other experienced martial artist in less than a month of training of about one hundred hours in Krav Maga of which twenty-one hours was the core curriculum and the rest was Instructor trainee evaluation and repeat training plus other non related fitness activities.
The name Martial Arts has a double meaning in the concept fighting arts, of which one is Art as a form of creative imaginative way of perfection of skills and excellence, and the other for exhibition purposes without other realistic application.
Unfortunately, as everyone notices on various level, today the name Krav Maga is just a cool name adopted by somehow lineage and non lineage instructors, some have remnants of Krav Maga and some do not. Lineage however does not means carrying the genes of Imrich's Family. Although it pertains to direct students of Imrich and their direct students, there is a catch here. The importance of the lineage, is carrying the genes of the original Krav Maga which was kept in the IDF until the IDF lineage was broken.
The IDF inherently tries to train his soldiers quickly using the newest training methods, to be battle ready, and a civilian master who's income is dependent on it had traditionally pulled it off for five years. There was a point that Krav Maga reputation for being a great intensive training system with the best training software, was lost completely.
To my opinion besides the fact that Immi did not want the real Krav Maga to get out of the IDF, but still needed a civilian hobby after he retired. Therefore, he kept the name as his system.
Since I went through both the IDF Krav Maga and the first civilian association I was able to tell the actual difference. While civilian Krav Maga skills would give the average student very simple self defense skills, the IDF Krav Maga prepared them to win a fight with any other experienced martial artist in less than a month of training of about One Hundred hours in Krav Maga of which Twenty-One hours was the curriculum and the rest was Instructor trainee evaluation and repeat training plus other non related fitness activities.

All is left is the fun of uniqueness, commercial brand, another form of fitness and basic comprehensive self defense advice good for television talk shows or Hollywood movies that make any false reality look real.
Developed in the Israel Defense Force, and diluted in the civilian market where you can find it in forms of two percent to forty percent or zero percent but still labeled Krav Maga, it's reputation is carried by the Israel Defense Force combat victories, and by the People of the Jewish Nationals and heritage great contribution to science medicine technology and fighting skills. While in Israel the pronunciation is Kravv Maagaa, Jews around the world that belong to Eastern European communities and learned Hebrew just for the purpose of reading the bible without understanding fluid meaning of all aspects of the composition, tend to preserve pronunciation from the Yiddish dialect of German which is basically grammatically incorrect German Language written in Hebrew alphabet and for some reason call it Krahv Mugah. At the same token you can say that Middle Eastern origin Jews born elsewhere than Israel would pronounce it Krav Majah.
The essence of the crowd pulled into the stream of Krav Maga is the average folk that lives in a world that had proven to have violence waiting for the right moment around the corner, using his logic not considering to try martial arts. This is because he does not have the time, or because he does not see the connection believing it would help him, but now finds hope in the comfort words of Krav Maga.
In addition well trained Martial Artists with high ranking black belts both in competitive full contact Martial Arts and Traditional Martial Arts which using mostly hard to test killing techniques due to lack of imaginative teaching skills, have suddenly realized perhaps also with real life threatening experience that they could not use what they learned in the Dojo in the reality of the street.
Remember that Imrich Lictenfeld the founder of Krav Maga had said he needed to modify all his athletic training of Boxing, Jujitsu, Wrestling, and Gymnastics and extract out most of the techniques to distill a new set of techniques to be used as a training method in order for it to work in a realistic Self Defense Scenarios.
All of the above folk whether professional Martial Artists or the average folk are humans that see the need to gain confidence in defending themselves and traditionally fell as pray to masters that kept them humiliated for long time until they allowed them to acquire confidence in defending themselves.
The question is not whether the self defense skills needed in the Military or Civilian market have an inherit difference nor it is whether or not Krav Maga is a name that was adopted by entertainments and fitness leisure activity industry and therefore is “given” to its purchasers at moderate small amounts.
The question is about all these true martial artists that started their childhood as street fighters to protect their personal dignity, the natural human right to live their lives without the danger of being physically oppressed by another human being and dedicating years of training with the intention and belief to better themselves in being ready to defend themselves and hoping to help others.
At some point many of them fell into the realization that this is the only thing they are capable of pulling off since it is the thing they have spent most of their time on. Yet they see that it is not always the best training system especially as the world acquiring faster methods of communications, transportation and language barrier translations, or the traditional body language.
Many of them are just worried about feeding themselves and families and are reluctant to do the same thing that they did for years which is feeding their families by providing a theatrical activity to their students, substituting self defense for cultural events and vague words of wisdom about life health, and soul and of course fitness training.
The sore point of this crowd that flock into the Krav Maga zone, are unscrupulous personalities that many do have background in traditional Martial Arts, and some did spend most of their lives in Israel and attempted in anyway possible to get a free ticket and preserve the old way of making money without ever providing the intended service.
Perhaps some of them have a mixed confused ideas about what it is the right way and what it is the wrong way of doing business but this also reflects on their personal belief and so called "fighting Systems" which only naive and folks with lack of knowledge might end up having to "rely on" in the last moment of their lives. Blind loyalty to a traditional or modern school will do this to many and it can become pathetic if they are willing to protect the memories of years spent on training, the lifestyle and their personal relationships with their school members but yet to neglect the personal integrity of the main purpose of a Martial Art Organization - to help people protect their lives.
While the motive of finding an imminent answer to a Military’s danger, had promoted quick solution out of solidarity to people that risk their lives for a moral goal, in the civilian life it was traditionally kept in secret and exponentially became a way of living and making a living(remember if you are the consumer and you agree with this you must be a sheep or a pig).
But where the reputation of a system shifts it's market with no integrity behind it, those people in the Martial Arts business that their initial essence was to preserve the integrity of themselves and humans, once they assume the name Krav Maga, should ask their conscience how can I bring my self- integrity back.
Although in the Military soldiers are present to receive training without pay, in the civilian market, the bulk of students are inclined to spend few hours a week on fitness and self defense activity combined. Therefore a combination of both is desired.
Not that in the IDF fitness is not required, but the distribution of intensive fighting skills training which inherently is complex at its high levels provides for one hour of warm up followed by the rest of the day honing of complex skills compared to civilian class of about half hour of overall or specific warm up and fifteen minutes of honing one specific skill and then fifteen minutes of intensive cardiovascular activity. Of course if the lesson last an hour and a half or forty five minutes the time span of each activity is changed probably the same proportion.
If there is a will there is a way! Until global lifestyle of the average folk will change, weekly fitness classes combined with little Krav Maga supplemented with intensive weekend seminars, or Krav Maga techniques used for fitness and using an imaginative method to combine all Krav Maga fighting and training principles into the short class and finding a more complex method to monitor the progression and future needs of the mass of students flocking the weekly class in a randomly fashion.
