Prioritizing Your Strikes - Myths and Truths/Boaz Aviram

The Knife Hand Strike has been described as very dangerous. In addition there are rumors that cupping your hands and striking someone’s ears with them can with the vibrations generate cause internal bleeding on the brain…

The top priority is being careful not to lose any of your slim chances in a confrontation. A confrontation could take few split seconds in which your life could end. So you have to have a methodical way to handle it. You are normally taken by surprise unexpectedly.

You need to understand what another human is capable doing to hurt you, and through that what you are able to do to hurt another human. Then you need to understand the formula which of you can do it first.

So you list pressure point which is control points where we can control someone's mind with pain or distraction, and we have our limbs which we use to inflict that pain or damage.

Therefore we need to use these limbs in the most efficient way and this will give us the best chance to reach our opponent's pressure points before he reaches ours.

We use our limbs to strike and kick our opponent's pressure points. We set up ranges of reach which basically understands that to cross that gap to reach the opponent's pressure points, we need to do it faster than the opponent's ability to respond to it by evasion, deflection and counter attack.

This should be the same limits that we set on our ability to deflect evade and counter attack. Generally linear motion has greater potential from the long range as it has greater reach and less projection.

Circular motion can generate more force in the shorter range but has more projection where even the fact the you need to get closer is considered as projection. However after distraction you can buy time to do stuff that takes more time.

If you see someone that is getting distracted by a circular motion, it does not mean that the circular motion is not projected, but rather, that this person is just not trained to prevent this. If you read about pressure points you see that the knife hand is usually directed to the temple, carotid artery, or kidney.

You then can assess from empirical experience what damage to expect, the lowering of the pulse, bleeding of the temple artery, or kidney severe pain.

Not projecting an attack meaning moving your limbs in one direction toward the target and not back and forth which shows the intention. So if your opponent is not distracted you do not have enough time to move your hand back and forth for a knife hand strike.

Cupped hand can tear the ear drums but mainly causes enough pain to get out of a hold. However, ironically when someone grabs you in a hold and is trying to grapple with you , you will need your arms for balance in motion, and you will not get much of a chance to stand still, and bring them both at the same time to your opponent's both ears. This is why this Kung Fu movies technique is not used in Pure Krav Maga.

Why not use projected strikes with distraction first? Because a Pure Krav Maga trained opponent will counter attack your distraction leaving you without a plan.

Nothing wrong in excelling in a sport but self defense should be well rounded skills and not in winning sports competitions, but in awareness through understanding the limits both you and your opponent may have through lecture and training and using them to your favor when you can.

Pure Krav Maga has all the techniques and the Tactics that the other Martial Arts have in their most efficient combination of form and prioritization geared for Self Defense Training under the constraint of reaction time. To be able to completely understand this statement you can read the book Krav Maga - Use Your Body as a Weapon!
