Ever seen a master teaching hand to hand combat not missing the smallest emphases point and correction and managing to fluidly cover a topic and let everyone in the class learn to a sufficient execution and drilling?

Ever seen a successful school where each and every student is making progress and get a well rounded comprehensive sufficient knowledge in hand to hand combat?

At some point during your instructor course it was mentioned something about a lesson plan. You might have thought it was something like a shopping list, something not to be bothered with, and had innate resistance to it thinking: "am I going to have to make a shopping list every time before I teach?  Not every time, but many times until you just don't need to is the correct answer!

After many teaching logged hours, I do not need to make a lesson plan, nor a course plan. I do on occasions however make a control list to get an idea what I've missed in the various organized chapters of the training such as impact push and pull grappling , breakfalls and rolllovers, pressure points, tactical entries into the hotzone/blocks, knife, stick and guns and instruction evaluation especially on days where I feel my memory might betray me.

But Lesson plans are the essence of the Defence forces! You need to control the covering of your intended material. You need to control the delivery of the material to your students.

In intensive courses like Krav Maga or in civilian self defense classes broken to 2 weekly sessions, one weekly session, or weekend seminars or all of the above, you need to have a course plan, and a lesson plan to ensure you fit what you intended and to ensure it has sufficient delivery of knowledge that will be retained in the student's brains and body. 

When it comes to hand to hand combat, for your brain to retain a complex material, you need to connect what you are learning and drill it and complete the circuit until it becomes clear as a daylight and adopted as a second nature.

The lesson plan, the hated shopping list you don't feel like making, is essential that you prepare it, use it until it is embedded as your second nature! When the time comes, your essence of being just certain that is going to happen within the allotted time frame.

What is a lesson plan? A list of how you are going to fit what you intended to teach into the time frame!

Warm Up - 20 Minutes
-Blood Circulation Jumping Jacks
-Circulate neck and shoulders
-Spinal ligaments warm up Lateral Horizontal and Vertical
-Knee and Ankle ligaments warm up
-Squats, abdominal sit-ups, and press-ups to warm up the large muscle groups
-Leg stretches

Front kick -20 Minutes
-Linking the subject, Demo, Explanation and breakdown Where it hits, how gravity contributes to the impact and efficiency the need to lunge or run to close the gap getting close into a kicking range, identifying the kicking range, and how the shorter range should be use to punching and not kicking and why, and what happens if the opponent moves a bit trying to evade the kick.

-The Lunge pivoting the torso and landing on the ball of the foot first both heels on the same line lifting the kicking leg's knee to 90 degrees ready to kick while the other lunging foot is landing
-The seesaw Motion
-Emphases: Both heels on the same line to eliminate lateral imbalance; Ankle locked in neutral position to avoid injury if contact with opponent's bones; Toes pointed up to facilitate kicking with the ball of the foot or heel.
-The Hammer Punch 5 to 10 minutes
-Punching Mitt Drills to mimic all possible scenarios and allow real time practice to sufficient execution ( for that you need to also use front punches and block kick.

Consider that in a larger class you might need few more minutes to correct more students.

Remember if you never used lesson plans you are either a genius that also has a photographic memory, or you are harboring moron students in the art of self defence!
